The silver mining boom in the American West during the 19th century gave rise to the Morgan silver dollar, a symbol of the era of westward expansion.
In 1921, following the mass melting of old silver dollars under the Pittman Act, Congress ordered the temporary resumption of Morgan dollar coinage; this year saw massive production and marked the conclusion of the Morgan series, after which the design was replaced by the Peace dollar.

Obverse: Profile portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap (symbolizing liberty) wreathed with wheat stalks;
Outer inscriptions: "E PLURIBUS UNUM," the year "1921" at the bottom, and stars encircling the rim.
Reverse: A bald eagle with spread wings, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons;
Outer inscription: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"; inscription above the eagle: "IN GOD WE TRUST"; at the bottom: "ONE DOLLAR."
