The Coin Behind the Design
Obverse: Hamburg’s coat of arms centers on a shield bearing the city’s distinctive three-towered gate, complete with brickwork and an arched entrance. A knight’s helmet crowned with an elaborate feathered crest rises above the shield, while two rampant lions stand on either side as heraldic supporters.
Flowing scrollwork anchors the composition, and a beaded border frames the intricate design. The inscription “FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG,” meaning “Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg,” identifies the city and connects the imagery to its historic identity.

Reverse: A crowned imperial eagle, the national emblem of the German Empire, bears a shield on its breast and extends its talons. Stars divide the surrounding inscription, while a beaded rim completes the composition.
