The portrait side bears the name Paul von Hindenburg and the dates 1847–1934, which refer to his lifespan rather than the coin's minting year. Historical Context

The Reichsmark was introduced in 1924 following Germany's hyperinflation crisis of 1923. It replaced the Papiermark as the country's permanent currency, following the introduction of the interim Rentenmark. This transition marked a new chapter in Germany's monetary history.

During the 1930s, silver 2- and 5-Reichsmark coins were issued in .625 and .900 silver respectively. This 1938 5-Reichsmark design pairs a portrait of Paul von Hindenburg with the state imagery of the Third Reich, placing it within the political and monetary history of that period. Its imagery is presented as historical context, not as an endorsement of the regime or its ideology.
